It is usually those who are well prepared, and who know what they will experience, who avoid the bad experiences.

There are a lot of things that you have to learn and get acquainted with before you can go out on the big seas. There are also a lot of things that the boat has to live up to. However, preparation is much more than installing solar panels, windlass and life raft.
